The Noorpur seat in Bijnor district, considered to be a BJP stronghold, fell vacant after the demise of BJP MLA Lokendra Chauhan in a road accident. The party fielded his widow, Avani Singh, from the constituency. With UP chief minister Yogi Adityanath and deputy chief minister Keshav Prasad Maurya personally campaigning for the bypoll here, Noorpur was being viewed as a prestige issue for the ruling party.
After the first round of counting on Thursday, Hasan took a lead of 1,264 votes which extended to 5,678 votes by the time the counting ended. Officials said that around 1.8 lakh out of 3.06 lakh voters exercised their franchise on May 28. While Hasan got 94,866 of those votes, Avani Singh managed to secure 89,188 votes. Meanwhile, Lok Dal candidate Gauhar Iqbal received only 1,197 votes.
Accepting her defeat, BJP’s Avani Singh said, “I accept my defeat. I have congratulated the winning candidate. There might have been some problems with our campaigning and that is why we lost. However, the party bagged 10,000 more votes as compared to the last election. People supported me and I am thankful to them. I also thank my party for showing faith in me. Today’s result will not have an impact on 2019 polls.”
