Competition, deadlines, achieving targets, promotions, appraisals, hectic schedule, office politics, long working hours, favouritism, EMI, household expenses, kids’ education and the list is endless… Do these words give you tension? The stress of modern day life is slowly taking away simple joy of living thus attracting lifestyle diseases like stress, anxiety, hypertension etc. that further leads to issues like depression, aloofness, addictions, strained relations.

So, how can a spiritual & wellness coach help you to tackle these issues, without going to a psychiatrist / GP and popping the antidepressants?  I am a classic example of overcoming hypertension, I was diagnosed with high blood pressure at the age of 21. At a young age to be fighting this disease was tough on me. My life started revolving around doctor visits and medicine which played havoc on me. That is when I decided to take charge of my life. I started making lifestyle changes along with the medication. These changes helped in a big way as my dosage was reduced and slowly I could enjoy my life again. In a few months time, I was totally off medicines. Today, almost 20 years later I still follow these simple mantras for a stress-free life which I would like to share with my readers to enable them lead a fulfilled life –

o    Be collaborative: Make your workplace more collaborative than competitive. The feeling of competition and jealousy between colleagues makes the office energy low. If you really need to compete, compete with what you were yesterday and try to improve and empower yourself today. Office politics will be everywhere, learn to be assertive when required but don’t be a part of it just because everyone is doing it.

o    De-clutter: Cluttered desk can lead to a cluttered mind, start decluttering both. Make your desk appealing and vibrant. Use accessories of bright colours like coloured glass bottles for water, pictures of your loved ones, keep fresh flowers or maybe an indoor plant. The positive ambiance on your desk will help in creating positive thoughts.

o    Meditation: Make a schedule to meditate early mornings and also, before sleeping. Start with just observing your breath for 5 – 10 minutes, initially, and slowly extending it to around 45 minutes or an hour.

o    Spend time with nature: Go for a walk in a park or a beach or anywhere in nature alone and walk barefoot feeling connected to mother earth just being in the moment. Once a year, visit places you haven’t visited before as it helps in increasing the happiness hormones.

o   Enjoy family time: Avoid taking office stress at home or worries of home to office. Do not carry the baggage where it is not required. Keep an office phone for office work and if possible switch it off when at home and on weekends. Give quality time to your family and yourself.

o  Digital Detox: Before sleeping, don’t log-in to social media sites from your smartphones, avoid playing games on phones or computers as they are very addictive and stimulates your brains so much that it does not allow you to relax.

o  Enjoy your meals: Avoid watching television, using your phones or working on computers at meal times including at your office. Relish the food you eat. Make a habit of blessing your food and water before consuming, this will relax as well as energize you. You can charge the water you drink with positive affirmations and thoughts. Before drinking, this is a very easy and powerful tool to manifest your desires.
