IPL 2018: The Play-Off Race Is Getting Intense As The Tournament Nears Its Business End

As things stand now, Delhi Daredevils have lost out on a chance to qualify for play-offs while Sunrisers Hyderabad are already through. This means 6 teams are fighting for 3 slots with 9 matches to go.

At the moment SRH top the table with CSK in second spot. KXIP and KKR are 3rd and 4th. Interestingly, RR who are fifth also have 12 points like 3rd and 4th positions but lose out on net run rate. MI and RCB come up behind at 6th and 7th place respectively.

Don’t Miss

Things look good for SRH and CSK and they will most probably finish in the top two, barring some massive upsets. It’s the other two spots that are up for grabs. The task is relatively uphill for MI and RCB, but RR have an easier role. Bottom line is 18 points seal a place in the last four, 16 points may get you through eventually while 14 might do it if other teams falter and you have a better net run rate.

The way things stand now the final four is more than likely to look like this – SRH, CSK, KXIP, KKR. RR might spring up a surprise but the net run rate may end up doing them in. So another potential combo is SRH, CSKK, KXIP, RR. What goes in KXIP’s favour is that they have an extra game in hand. So does RCB but it’s a tall order to climb from 7th to 4th spot. They not only need to win all three matches, but hope their net run rate is boosted and the other teams lose certain games. Which means 5 teams are vying for 3 slots.

So basically, the top four teams are for the moment in control of their own fate, which is the best situation to be in. Unless, we see a complete turnaround, expect the current top four to be the same line-up for the play-offs. Finishing in the top two is an added bonus, a win in the play-offs gets you direct entry into the final and a loss gives you a second chance.
