WhatsApp has gradually become an integral part of our day to day lives as we chat, share media and stay connected to a plethora of people which include our friends, family colleagues and more. Since WhatsApp is an instant-messaging platform, we tend to chat for extended hours with someone or even ask for an important document to be shared through the platform, making all of our chat history, way important than many might think.
However, what if you accidentally delete your chat history? What if all the media and documents you shared or revised through WhatsApp get deleted? It is a daunting state to be in but if you are looking for an answer on ‘How to recover WhatsApp Chats on Android smartphones’, you are at the right place friend as here we are going to reveal how one can restore the WhatsApp chat history, media and documents even if they were older than those which can be recovered from recent backups.
Recover WhatsApp Chat History from recent backups
If you have the backups of WhatsApp chat history, then you will be able to recover it from your backups. If you have deleted any Chat history or even a message without backing it up, you can also recover lost messages and attachments from the automatic backups of WhatsApp. It is because the Facebook-owned WhatsApp app automatically creates backups every day at 4 am (local time) and then stores it on your phone’s internal memory or the microSD card used in the Android phone.
In order to recover WhatsApp messages, you will need to uninstall the WhatsApp app and then reinstall the chat app again. That being said, during the installation process, you will then be prompted to restore all your message history. Simply tap Restore and everything, including chats, media and attachments, less than seven days old will be restored.
Recover WhatsApp Chat History from older (less recent) backups
You can follow these instructions in order to restore WhatsApp chats or attachments from a backup:
Step 1: Uninstall WhatsApp.
Step 2: Open the WhatsApp database or the backup folder. Decide which backup file needs to be restored.
Step 3: Rename the file from “msgstore-YYYY-MM-DD.1.db.crypt7” to “msgstore.db.crypt7”.
Step 4: Install WhatsApp.
Step 5: When asked to restore, tap Restore.
Step 6: You can find the WhatsApp backup files from the /sdcard/WhatsApp/Databases folder, which will be saved with names such as “msgstore-YYYY-MM-DD.1.db.crypt7”.
Note that the WhatsApp backup folder might be located in either your smartphone’s internal storage or the external memory. Also, you will lose the chat history for which the backup wasn’t created before uninstalling the app. So, it is recommended to follow this method after your daily backup has been created at 4 am (your local time).
