BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) – Three different types of engines are now being manufactured at the Tonawanda Engine plant. This new technology is more efficient and it will give you more miles per gallon.
“It’s about improving the performance and fuel economy of a V-8 engine,” said Ramanujam Ramanujam, Plant Director.
The General Motors Tonawanda Powertrain Plant is the first in the country to launch high technology engines for trucks, starting with the 2019 Silverado.
“This engine allows us to maximize efficiency of each of the cylinders so we can run not just 4 or 8 cylinder mode but any different combinations of 17 cylinders,” said Ramanujam.
“The cylinders could go from 1 to 8 and all kinds of different variables. when you need more power you would get more power, and if you needed to get better gas mileage it would give you better gas mileage,” said Chuck Herr, UAW Local 774 Shop Chairman.
This announcement is expected to benefit the community be retaining jobs at the plant for years to come.
“They entrusted us with this incredible investment which the future of General Motors relies on their trucks so for everybody to put all of that into Tonawanda to launch that, that shows a lot for their respect for Tonawanda,” said Herr.
These engines are already being manufactured at the Tonawanda Engine plant, they’ll be in trucks and out on the roads by this Fall.
