Cboe Europe and JPMorgan dominated at Financial News’s 16th annual Trading & Technology Awards Europe at the V&A Museum in London last night.
The stock exchange operator, which is part of Cboe Global Markets, picked up the coveted award for Exchange Group of the Year for the fourth consecutive year and Trading Initiative of the Year.
Its third victory was secured by Mark Hemsley, chief executive of Cboe Europe, who took home the inaugural Industry Leader of the Year awardd — winning praise for his preparation for the revised Markets in Financial Instruments Directive, the sweeping set of European trading rules that went live at the start of January.
Diana Chan, celebrating the near end of her decade-long reign at clearing house EuroCCP, was runner-up.
JPMorgan won two trophies, with victories in the flagship European Trading House of the Year and Best Firm for Market Structure and Execution Consulting categories — beating rivals Morgan Stanley and Bank of America Merrill Lynch, respectively.
UBS reclaimed the title of sellside Electronic Execution Department of the Year, which it last won in 2016, while $6.3tn fund manager BlackRock took home the Buyside Electronic Execution Department of the Year award.
In one of the most competitive award categories of recent years, Jane Street won bragging rights as the Specialist Liquidity Provider of the Year, only just beating Virtu Financial and XTX Markets. Elsewhere in the search for liquidity, TP Icap was named Interdealer Broker of the Year and Liquidnet was crowned Specialist Agency Broker of the Year.
LCH, the central counterparty majority-owned by London Stock Exchange Group, won Clearing House of the Year, pulling away from Intercontinental Exchange’s ICE Clear Europe after the two rivals tied last year. However, the LSE’s FTSE Russell finished second to MSCI in the inaugural award for Index Provider of the Year.
