High-octane action sequences seem to be the flavour of the season, with Tollywood filmmakers increasingly spending a bomb on making them.
After the makers of Prabhas-starrer Saaho spent around Rs 90 crores on the action sequences during the Dubai schedule, Ram Charan reportedly spent around Rs 6 crores for the action scenes in his forthcoming film directed by Boyapati. The latest one to join this list is Chiranjeevi.
Apparently, the makers of the megastar’s film Sye Raa are spending around Rs 40 crores for filming action sequences and have erected a special set on the city outskirts to shoot the scenes in this schedule.
Amidst uncertainty and declining success rates, why are filmmakers spending such a bomb only on action sequences?
Producer D.V.V. Danayya states that these action scenes are justified since they are part of the script.
“Nothing is forcefully inserted just to create hype. Moreover, a filmmaker like Boyapati who is a master in filming action scenes knows best. These are the scenes to be watched out post the film’s release,” says Danayya about the Ram Charan-starrer.
Meanwhile, director Surender Reddy opines that returns on films are directly proportional to the content.
“If you make films with quality content, the audience will definitely accept it. But content doesn’t mean just grandeur, it should engage the audience. And filmmakers don’t mind shelling out a bomb if they feel it’s worth it. In my earlier films like Race Gurram, Kick, Athanokkade, etc., there were some high-octane action sequences which were totally justified,” he explains.
Interestingly, one argument states that filmmakers are shooting more action sequences because they fetch a higher price when it comes to selling Hindi dubbing rights and satellite rights.
“Even small films starring actors like Nara Rohit, Bellamkonda Srinivas and other newcomers are getting handsome deals for Hindi, mainly because those films are high on action. Hindi TV channels need such action-oriented films. Hence, these days, filmmakers are looking to cash in on the action mania and get the best deals,” informs a trade source.
