The relationship between an actor and director in Bollywood is hard to describe. One might call it delicate and tricky. However, when it comes to the relationship between that of a director and his star prodigy it is even more complicated to say the least. While some keep the relationship happy go lucky for the length of their entire career, some get into messy controversies with their prodigies.
There are are a few directors of Bollywood who got involved in a controversy with their star prodigies. Here are the ones we are talking about.
Luv Ranjan and Kartik Aryan
Luv Ranjan not only gave him his first break, but he cast him in 4 of his films and gave him Sonu Ki Titu Ki Sweety which launched him into superstardom. However, if recent reports are to be believed then Kartik had a fall out with his mentor over monetary issues, though both have refuted the rumors.
Ram Gopal Varma and Nisha Kothari
Nisha Kothari was one of Ram Gopal Varma’s many finds who had a brief affair with Bollywood before fading into oblivion. However, apart from her affair with Bollywood it was also believed that Ramu was also having an affair with his prodigy. The affair went kaput and since then Nisha has not been seen in any Bollywood film or anywhere for that matter!
Sanjay Leela Bhansali and Ranbir Kapoor
Even before Bhansali launched Ranbir in Sawaariya, Ranbir was working as an assistant director with him. However, Bhansali later complained to his close associates that after the release of the film Ranbir gave him a cold shoulder. Although none of them ever accepted their relationship going sour, but the fact they have never worked together again seems to justify that there was at least some truth in these rumors.
Anurag Basu and Kangana Ranaut
Anurag Basu did us fans a major favor by spotting and casting Kangana in her debut film Gangster. Kangana also has on several occasions call Basu her mentor. However, their relationship turned sour when Anurag edited out major portions of Kangana from his film Life…In A Metro and did not seem to deliver on the promise that Kangana’s role would be as significant as Barbara’s in Kites. The two did not speak for quite sometime after the incident and even though they seem to have patched up now, we have not seen them working together ever since.
Special Mention: Govinda and David Dhawan
Although David Dhawan did not launch Govinda, but together they have done 17 films together, most of which are some of the biggest hits of Govinda’s life. Their friendship and working chemistry went kaput when David Dhawan decided to make a remake of Shaukeen according to Govinda’s idea but decided to cast Rishi Kapoor instead of him. An enraged Govinda said in an interview that he kept requesting him to have him at least for a small part in the film but apparently the director did not even do that. When asked he would ever work with Dhawan again Govinda said he would never work with him ever again as did not stand by him during his rough patch.
